HOW ARE YOU RUNNING YOUR RACE?
Running the race of your life can be a daunting task. There are so many obstacles to overcome, and it’s easy to feel like you’re not making progress or that someone else is doing it better than you are. But that’s where I want you to stop and look at yourself in the mirror! You are running the race of your life right now—and that means all those other people who might be running faster or slower than you are? The important thing is this: You need to accept yourself for who you are right now and celebrate all the obstacles that have already been overcome on your journey.
Running the race of our lives is an analogy many of us have encountered.
Running the race of our lives is an analogy that many of us have encountered. It’s used to describe the challenges we face in life, as well as our journey through life.
The metaphor comes from Philippians 3:12-14: “Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already been made perfect, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me. Brothers, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead…”
Here’s a quick breakdown: The author compares his life to a race where there are obstacles along the way (we all know how annoying those can be). He says he has not arrived at his goal yet and still has work to do (good news—so do you!). However, he’s going after it anyway!
In the business world, we often talk about running a race.
In the business world, we often talk about running a race. It’s a metaphor for life and work. Whether you’re just starting out or have already been in business for some time, there are always new opportunities on the horizon to run towards.
Here are three ways you can keep running your race:
- Run through obstacles with grace and strength
- Keep moving forward even when things get hard
- Make sure you know where the finish line is
Each person and each business runs the race at a different pace and has a unique set of obstacles to overcome.
Each person and each business runs the race at a different pace, with a unique set of obstacles to overcome. You can’t run someone else’s race for them. No matter how much you want to help, if they are not running their own race, then it isn’t going to work out.
The same goes for your business. You may have certain strengths or weaknesses that put you at an advantage or disadvantage compared with others in your market space. Your goals may be very different than those of your competitors, which could mean you need different strategies than they do in order to achieve success.
Because of their unique characteristics, no two leaders are going to run their races the same way.
Because of their unique characteristics, no two leaders are going to run their races the same way. Some leaders may be more inclined to take risks in order to achieve a goal, while others might prefer safer approaches that minimize risk. These differences can create friction between teammates who are working toward their own goals but not necessarily those of the team.
While leadership styles can vary widely from one individual to another, there are certain key traits that successful leaders share:
- They have strong communication skills and an ability to articulate clear visions for themselves and their teams.
- They have a deep understanding of what motivates other people and how they can be engaged in achieving common goals.
- They have an understanding of human behavior and how people think (even though we’re all different).
We need to give ourselves permission to run our own races in our own time and in our own ways.
You could be running your race and not even realize it. You may think you’re traveling at a snail’s pace and haven’t progressed an inch, but really you’ve been diligently building toward something big. In fact, all of us are running our own races—some more quickly than others. There are no prizes for being the first person to finish a 5k run (but there are plenty of other amazing rewards!). And that’s okay! It is what it is, and we need to give ourselves permission to run our own races in our own time and in our own ways.
The key is knowing yourself: what works for you? How can you best accomplish the goals that are important to YOU? Be true to your path, style and pace!
When we allow ourselves to run at our own paces and in our own styles, we can reach new heights as leaders, innovators, and entrepreneurs.
We need to change the way we talk about race. Instead of comparing ourselves to other people—“I’m not fast enough” or “I’m not as good at this as I want it to be”—we need to find out what works for us individually. When you’re running your own race, you feel proud of how far you’ve come and excited about where you might go next!
You should be proud of how you are running your race!
But if you are running your race and not comparing yourself to others, then you can be proud of how you are running your race.
You should be proud of how even when things get tough, and it seems like everyone else is doing better than you, that you’re still going strong!
You might think that someone else’s success will make yours look less important. But really, no matter what happens on the outside or how well anyone else does in their life, you need to remember that your wins are still just as valid as theirs!
