I know when you read the title you were probably thinking, what is she crying for? I hope you were too. Anyone will tell you, under this Girl Boss is a little soft side. I cry! LOL! Yep, I do. If it’s a graduation or a funeral, I cry. Tears of joy or tears of sorrow. I get soft sometimes. Crying does not mean you are weak; it means you know how to celebrate and show compassion. Honestly, I get that from my mother. LOL! She tries to hide it, but I can hear the quiver in her voice!
This won’t be long but a simple plea for help. When was the last time you volunteered? Sit back and think. I’m waiting! Probably only do for the gram, right? Well, that’s the problem that I see. There are so many people doing it for the cute IG photos, we forget real people are out there and need some guidance. I like to give my time to GOD (duh) and the youth. I feel they need it the most especially our youth girls. You know growing up, we saw Claire Huxtable on tv now they see women only wear 90% of clothing. Child, it’s time. Time for a change in my opinion. I miss the days when women walked with grace and elegance. Now don’t get me wrong, there are a lot of us out there, but we fight a little harder to be seen.
I volunteer at a community center here in Opelika, AL and the things the girls talk about blows my mind. I get it, they have more technology than they need right now and too many variables in school to really be a child. But I feel like we failed them.
We’ve allowed the world and society to raise our kids and it shows.
Now to why I cried, there is a young lady that I teach dance to that for some reason, I connect with. Her upbringing is not of my approval, but I try my best to show her an alternative to the life she has. I try to show her she can be the change for her family. Recently, this young lady hit rock bottom and when I found out, I cried my eyes out. I had to go and see her and put eyes on her.
Once I made it to her, she gave me the BIGGEST hug and screamed my name. (The kids call me Ms. K!) And with all that she has going on in life, she was able to smile and say, can we find a dance studio for our classes because she misses me and dancing. WOW! By the time I made it back to my vehicle, I had tears rolling down my face.
- I didn’t realize the impact my classes were having on her
- I pray to God to turn her situation around for the positive
- Sometimes we second guess our decisions in life, but when we take that leap of faith it’s amazing
- You never know who is really watching your every move.
- Does this mean I am somebody’s role model? Sheeeshhh the pressure, I still cuss. LOL!
I say all this to say, no matter if you show up for 1 or 1000, giving your time to help someone will always be a great reward. The Lord loves when we do the 3Ts – time – talent – treasures! It’s not as hard as people make it.
Here’s a challenge for you!
Find a community, church, school, and give just an hour of your time. The impact you can have will be tremendous.
Now I caution you. If you are not a person who can commit to showing up, just give ya money. I’m being serious, you don’t know what some youth go through and consistently is what some of them need. Seeing someone taking the time to care.
